Water is life

Water is life

By now you’re hopefully dwindling down those carbs. You may be starting to feel a little bit different. You might get impatient and think, why not just all in and shoot straight down to twenty carbs? Sure you could, but you might get the keto flu (don’t worry it’s not contagious). It’s basically your body going through withdrawals from the sugar and carb crack. Yes it feels as bad as it sounds. But if you take it slow you can minimize the affects of the adjustment. If you play your cards right you just might pass this stage without that keto flu.

Thirst is the first thing I think I noticed when I started keto, and that makes since because your body is going through a huge chemistry change. When your body runs out of carbs to use for energy, it turns to the next available source of easy fuel. All be it not as easy as carbs, the process requires a lot of water. Drink up! The last thing you want is to hinder yourself with dehydration, only that but not drinking enough water and eating enough of the right foods to reap your electrolytes will leave you feeling weak, and light headed. Those carbs are what your body uses to hold on to water and sodium, so when you go keto, you don’t retain water as much and it’s easy to get dehydrated.

Replacing Those Electrolytes

Most people think that electrolytes are only found in hydration drinks or table salt. But the truth is, you can get the same benefit from eating the right foods to stay in balance. And luckily for us they are perfect for the keto dash. Here’s a list of veggies that can help:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Tomatoes
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Almonds
  • Broccoli
  • Celery
  • Strawberries
  • Lettuce

So now we want to work those into every meal and snack of the day. Just pay attention your portions and be mindful of your calories. When finding those keto alternatives, sometimes a meal can be all the right things but if you don’t mind your portions, things can get out of hand fast and wreck all that hard work. Portion control is important in any diet, not just the keto dash. Too much of anything can be a bad thing. This is where practice make perfect. I will follow up with a post on portion controls so stay tuned. And stay stoked!
